How do we get there?
Cabarete Beach is a 20 minute cab ride ($30 US) from Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP). This is the ideal airport to fly into. If you are unable to fly into Puerto Plata, you can also consider flying into Cibao International Airport in Santiago (STI), which is a picturesque 1-1/2 hour drive by car.
Flying from USA
There are relatively inexpensive daily direct flights to Puerto Plata from Miami on American Airlines, and from Atlanta on Delta Airlines. Continental Airlines also offers direct flights from several cities.
Flying from Europe
Several major carriers operate daily flights from Europe into Puerto Plata - these include Air France, Air Portugal, Balair, Condor, Hapag Lloyd, Iberia, Lauda Air and LTU. Also there are many charter airlines operating from Europe. Many of these airlines fly directly into Puerto Plata International Airport (POP): Air 2000, Air Europe, Britania, Finnair, Leisure Air, Malev Air, Spanair and Sobelair.
Flying from Canada
The charter airlines, Air Transat and Air Canada Vacation, fly into Puerto Plata
Flying from South America
Unfortunately there are no direct flights from South America into Puerto Plata International Airport. Most often you will need to fly via Miami, USA, or San Juan, Puerto Rico. Most of these flights are operated by American Airlines and American Eagle.
How is the wind & weather during the event?
Cabarete's Wind Machine!
Like most of the Caribbean Islands, Cabarete is blessed with consistent summer trade winds that blow from the East and North East. What makes Cabarete so special is that the DR is home to the highest mountain range in all of the Caribbean, with Duarte's Peak that reaches 10,700ft above sea level. And the 1000ft mountains directly behind the Cabarete beach, together with Duarte's Peak cause the average 12 knot trade winds to accelerate and wrap around the mountain, in the process becoming 15-25 knots from midday until the sun sets in the evening pretty every day during the summer months. The wind machine comes on strong every day like clockwork.
June, July and August are the premium wind sport months in Cabarete and one can expect wind almost every single day during this time. Getting skunked is not something that happens in Cabarete.
Around 5-6pm the winds calm down to a very gentle breeze, making dining on the beach a very pleasant experience.
In the morning the lack of strong wind allows those who over indulged the night before to sleep in late and recover. However, the gentle off-shore morning breeze makes a quick surfing trip to the nearby Enquentro Surf Beach a fun morning activity for those that wake up early. And at midday the wind machine switches on again and everyone takes to the water.
With its tropical warm waters, stunning palm lined beaches and quaint village life, Cabarete is the ultimate windsurfing and kitesurfing destination. With great surfing just short drive away.
Click here for Windfinder.com's wind forecast. But be aware that this forecast is a VERY low estimate. Usually, you can add at least 30% to what you see.
